2019 SBA Awards - Call For Nominations


Nominate a Small Business Champion for an SBA Award!

Nominations due January 9, 2019.
Only nominees located in San Diego and Imperial Counties will be accepted by the SBA San Diego District Office. Small Business Champion nominees may or may not be small business owners. Self-nominations will be accepted.
Completed awards packages must be delivered by mail/by hand to the SBA San Diego District Office, Attn: Cynthia Harris, 550 West C Street, Suite 550, San Diego, CA 92101, by January 9, 2019, 1 pm PST.  Emailed packages cannot be accepted.
We strongly recommend completed packages are submitted early to get feedback and support in advance of the final deadline. 
2019 CHAMPION AWARD CATEGORIES-SUMMARY
Small Business Champion Categories: Those who promote small business, including volunteering time and services to small business interests and groups, advocating the cause of small business in the legislative process. (Detailed nomination information and criteria for each category is included below.)
  • Minority Small Business Champion of the Year
  • Women in Business Champion of the Year
  • Veteran Small Business Champion of the Year
  • Financial Services Champion of the Year
  • Small Business Journalist of the Year
Nomination Requirements for Champion Awards
What information must the nomination packages for the Champion awards contain? 
Nominations must contain the information below. Incomplete nomination packages will not be considered. 
  1. A completed background form (SBA Form 3300, Award Nominee Background Form) which is available at www.sba.gov/nsbw. For “team” nominations, a background form is required for each team member; 
  2. A completed nomination form (SBA Form 3315, District Office Award) (Pages 1 - 3 only, put N/A for remaining sections.)
  3. A nomination letter or statement page that addresses the criteria listed below for the appropriate category.
  4. An original 8” x 10” or 5” x 7” photo of the nominee or a digital photo – at least 300 dpi is required; photocopies are not acceptable. For “team” nominations, a photo of each nominee or group photo is acceptable Note: Action photos are preferable. No logos or finished products in photos please; and 
  5. Additional supporting documentation deemed significant by the nominator, including news clips, letters of recommendation, and other evidence of appropriateness of the nomination. Supporting documentation must not exceed 10 pages. No videos will be considered.
Criteria for Small Business Champion Award Categories
Financial Services Champion - Individuals who assist small businesses through advocacy to increase usefulness and availability of accounting or financial services
  • Outside of regular business duties, the amount and quality of assistance given small businesses in obtaining financing
  • Advocacy of changes in the financial services industry to assist small firms
  • Encouragement of the flow of investment capital to small ventures
  • Active support for legislative or regulatory action designed to help small firms
  • Other significant contributions made by the nominee through financial services or accounting industry to advance small business interests


Minority Small Business Champion of the Year- Has fulfilled a commitment to support minority entrepreneurship
  • Active support for legislative or regulatory action designed to help minority small businesses
  • Efforts to increase business and financial opportunities for minority entrepreneurs
  • Legal, financial or managerial assistance provided to enhance minority business ownership
  • Volunteer efforts to strengthen the role of minority-owned businesses in the community
  • Other accomplishments demonstrating effectiveness in improving environment for the creation and expansion of minority-owned businesses
  • Advocacy of the minority-owned business community as a whole, not solely for individual personal advancement


Small Business Journalist of the Year - Journalists representing television, radio, electronic or print media who report and champion small business issues.
  • Active support for legislative or regulatory action designed to help small business
  • Efforts to increase business and financial opportunities for entrepreneurs
  • Volunteer efforts to strengthen the role of small businesses in the community
  • Other accomplishments demonstrating effectiveness in improving the environment for the creation and expansion of small businesses
  • Advocacy of the small business community as a whole, not solely for individual personal advancement


Veteran Small Business Champion of the Year- Has fulfilled a commitment to advancing small business opportunities for veterans if the U.S. armed forces
  • Active support for legislative or regulatory action designed to help veteran-owned small businesses
  • Efforts to increase business and financial opportunities for veteran entrepreneurs
  • Legal, financial or managerial assistance provided to enhance veteran’s business ownership
  • Volunteer efforts to strengthen the role of veteran-owned businesses in the community
  • Other accomplishments demonstrating effectiveness in improving environment for the creation and expansion of veteran-owned businesses
  • Advocacy of the veteran-owned business community as a whole, not solely for individual personal advancement

Women in Business Champion of the Year- Has fulfilled a commitment to the advancement of women’s business ownership
  • Active support for legislative or regulatory action designed to help women-owned small businesses
  • Efforts to increase business and financial opportunities for women entrepreneurs
  • Legal, financial or managerial assistance provided to enhance women’s business ownership
  • Volunteer efforts to strengthen the role of women-owned businesses in the community
  • Other accomplishments demonstrating effectiveness in improving environment for the creation and expansion of women-owned businesses
  • Advocacy of the women-owned business community as a whole, not solely for individual personal advancement
